Campus Demands Declared: Shahjalal University Shibir Chapter Issues 52-Point Charter
Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) chapter has publicly issued a 52-point charter of demands across 13 key areas, including infrastructural and academic reforms for the university’s new campus.
The announcement was made through a Facebook post on the page Chhatra Shibir SUST on Wednesday at 11:00 am. According to the post, the chapter’s president, Tarek Monowar, and general secretary, Masud Rana Tuhin, submitted a memorandum outlining the demands to the university’s vice-chancellor on Tuesday evening. Monowar is a student of the Anthropology department, while Tuhin is from the Bangla department, both enrolled in the 2016-17 academic year.
Key demands include:
- Identifying and taking legal action against students, faculty, and staff accused of aiding “fascist actions” during the July upsurge.
- Reducing admission fees, semester fees, and credit fees to a reasonable level.
- Establishing student loans for purchasing laptops required for academic programs.
- Prioritizing residential hall allotments for female students from their first year.
- Addressing the campus transportation crisis by introducing additional buses.
- Providing financial incentives to promote student research.
- Ensuring merit-based recruitment of faculty.
The announcement follows similar public revelations by Islami Chhatra Shibir chapters at other institutions, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, and the Islamic University.
